Floors that need a grinding service are not necessarily in “bad” condition. They can be in a good condition, even with a silver package polish, but these floors can easily suffer from poor installation with what we call “lippage” problems. Lippage is a professional term for tiles that are not laid flat or evenly, with a height difference between each tile. The difference in height means that the floor can not be honed with our pad resin diamond system, because the pad resin system is made to work flat meaning it can not deal with lippage, the pads will only skip over the lippage meaning an uneven polish. Before the natural stone floor can be honed and polished, it needs to be made smooth by grinding the lippage away, so the tile lips are all the same height and smooth. In general, floors with lippage above 3mm will need to be ground level before the floor can be honed and polished with our pad system. A floor will also need to be ground if it has deep scratches and etch damage that can not be removed by our resin pad system.
